After seeing Wreck-it Ralph

(This post contents spoiler. Don’t read it if you haven’t see the movie.)

There is so much to talk about Wreck-It, so I break it into different sections:

Character setting:

The movie covers characters with most of the standard personality: the bad guys, the good guys, the cute little girl, and the captain. Most of their personalities seem to be one-dimensional. It makes sense with the fact that they have programed personality and there are many character introduced to the movie, thought I still think the main character Ralph can develop more, especially in some scene he is too much like a Hulk (and yes, one scene he actually shows up as green :P). I’m not a big fan of saving the world at the last minute endings … just give me more twists. Maybe the movie is still targeting a much younger audiences.

Animation:

Yes, Disney and Pixar are the industry standard. There are so many good examples to demonstrate the principles of animation. Like one scene, the King Candy enters into his greeting room. Instead of driving directly to his throne, he drives in circle and then get to the throne. I like all the textures in the movie: the fabrics, the soft candies and hard candies. The mud in one scene that Ralph falls from the building and drops into mud looks less amazing, but the cream that Ralph splashes on to other peoples’ clothes is a nice touch, they look pixelated.

Marketing decision:

As you can see from the movie and the credits, Disney must spend TONES of money buying the copyrights of many classic characters from NAPCOM and Nintendo and so on. That means they want to please the arcade generation. However as I said before, the plot of Wreck-it Ralph is for kids, or be more fair, Wreck-it Ralph is a light comedy that is suitable for all ages to see. I don’t dislike movies for all ages, but it just too obvious for me to see that the other classic arcade characters are there to bring up the popularity of the movie … Disney, you can do better than that.
